THE CLASH - 100 Club, 'Punk Festival' 20.9.76

Yep another from the 100 Club gig, a classic set from The Clash, same quality, audience recording, but as the rest, great bit of history to have. Does anyone have the Subway Sect recording, enjoy!

  1. Hello ,
I don't know if I already told you , but in 79 OR 80 perhaps, Clash played for the christmas night in London, and with some friends ( without money as me ) we walked for about twenty km to saw them in a little surprise concert .
    It's a great remember !
    :)

  4. Is there something besides getting my head out of my ass, that allows downloading the MP3. Got lost in a world of buying upgraded software madness.

  6. I was at the first night of the 100 Club ‘Festival’ and am always bemused to see it referred to as ‘The infamous’. It wasn’t infamous at all. It was a curious mixture of humanity, smells and music. There seems to be a lot of ‘confusion; (sic) regarding Sid, a girl and a glass. Most of the confusion is over what night it happened. I have seen it written as happening on the first night, and the second. There WAS a brief ruckus on the first night. Something broke, there was the familiar ‘rumbling’ when something is about to kick off..and it was over in less than a minute. I was approx 3 yards from the incident and….I’ve seen far worse in pubs across the nation on any given Saturday. Perhaps the lass WAS badly injured..but not in the incident I saw. People make claims for the gig that just aren’t true. Siouxsie’s performance was mildly interesting for the first 10 minutes, then everyone got bored. It wasn’t as ‘amazing a moment’ as some make out. Subway Sect were great and you’d never guess they were only just ‘starting out’. Perhaps my memory is messed up but…I swear siouxsie played before Sect, not after them. Clash were great despite one or two technical problems…stood near the front for their set. They were the most obviously ‘together’ band..and the most obviously ‘rock’n’roll, which probably accounts for how readily they were consumed by the ever traditionalist public and record labels. The mood in the club did change as time for Pistols to play approached. They came on..John said ‘Awright my chuckies’ and off they went. To be honest, they were only ok. Cook and Matlock held it together, Jones was sloppy as hell and Lydon was John. It was my ‘first time’ and first time anythings can be memorable for good and bad. MOST of the night was very good. The Pistols’ mauling of Substitute was an affront to a Who fan as I was! Yes, there was a Chinese food bar. I bought two pancake rolls and offered one to a sad, lonely girl standing next to me. She declined my offer and while I was disappointed at the rebuff..I was hungry and devoured both rolls in a greasy minute. Like most ‘legendary’ events..it was interesting rather than amazing. It WAS transformative obviously since I walked the 70 miles back to my home in Portsmouth and set about learning chords on a borrowed guitar. Happy daze.
