ADAM & THE ANTS, Live The Roundhouse 14.5.78

I have been putting off this post for a while now as there's loads of Ant stuff out there on the net, but after reading the brilliant post on 'Kill Your Pet Puppy'  it made me do this. To me 'Dirks Wears Whites Sox' is one of the best Lp's ever released, lyrically and musically, I don't think I have ever been bored of listening to it and tracks from it are always on my play list. I loved Adam & The Ants until the unfortunate split and the white line across his face, all the pre 80's stuff is just genius with my all time fav tracks being 'Whip In My Vales' and 'Lou'.
I had seen he was gigging again and couldn't believe that he was coming to my local venue. I was in two minds whether  to go as I didn't want to shatter the very fond early memories I had of them.
Again it was the 'KYPP' post that pushed me to purchase a ticket and brave the gig.
As I approached the venue I still was having second thoughts as I began to see folk with beads in their hair and even one guy with a white strip across his nose !! It was a real mixed bunch, the support were okay and I was still thinking I had wasted £22, as looked at the two drum kits on the stage and as certain members of the crowd kept doing the Indian cry. As the lights went down and the bass was hit my nerves turned to joy and excitement as his band started to play 'Plastic Surgery'. Anyway enough of this gig type review to cut a long gig short Adam played about 75 per cent of the old material including for the first time 'Lou'. Adam told the crowd he has never done it before because he never knew the lyrics as Jordon would always scream them, so he rang her last week to find them out ! It was a shame that most of the crowd seemed to be there for the more charty stuff but at the end of the day Adam is looking great, smiling, sounding as good as ever and he's enjoying himself along with a band who are tight. I came away  a very happy early ant fan, if he's playing near you don't be put off,  go !!!
So here's the goodies I have loads of early Ant stuff from demo's to live recordings so if anyone wants any more just ask and I will send you a list of what I have, links to them or I'll  post more but for now here's one of my fav early audience recordings that I picked up years ago at Camden market it has one of the best set lists i think. I have also added another from this year with the set list very close to the one I saw them do, enjoy!!

PINK TURDS IN SPACE. 'Live Mc Gonagles, Dublin, 29.1.89

Eventually got this done, again you can't find much about this band on the net but to me they were one of the best bands to come out of Ireland. This is a crisp S/B recording from a gig with 'HDQ', which I will post later. I just love the amount of power and energy they create in their sound and top it all the growling vocals that go right through ya. I have also put their side of the split Lp they did with 'Sedition' which is one of me all time favs, so if your feeling like letting off steam, turn up the volume and open the windows and enjoy !!

REDSKINS. Live GLC Festival, London 10.6.84.

Here's another 'Redskins' classic piece of history, this is an audience recording of their set at, "Jobs For A Change", GLC Festival, Jubilee Gardens, London. As you'll see from the poster quite a line up, these festivals were organised by the labour led Greater London Council, at this event the Redskins set was cut short by 80 or so fascist skinheads who I suppose objected to seeing fellow skins supporting red Ken and having leftist views. As usual alot of fighting took place on and off stage as can be heard ! It did eventually all charm down and the rest of the festival went on fine !

I have also put the first 'John Peel' Session on here, does any one have the second or the 'Kid Jensen' Sessions as I can't find mine anywhere?!

MARK ASTRONAUT. "Restricted Hours", Live @ Club85 + "The Otters," Tracks.

What a nice surprise, I have just been sent these tracks by Joe Davin who plays along side Mark in 'The Astronauts' and 'The Otters'. Restricted Hours are Mark sparsely accompanied by long time collaborators Alan Cowley and Bob Green. This great recording sneaks up on you with beautifully threaded collection of cosmic folk ragas, haunting guitar drones and first class songs, that include reworked versions from the Restricted Hours split 7", and a few Astronauts classics. Beguiling tracks for those moments when there's nothing left to do but lie back and let the worlds worries pass over you. And then you have two tracks from 'The Otters' again brilliant stuff and on the track 'Heresy' it features Chris from 'RDF'. Here are two links for more info on the band plus tracks, click on the brilliant 'My Little Bubble' and ' Urban Aspirines'. A massive thanks again to Joe for these. As always enjoy!!

CRISIS. Live, Guildford Student Union, 1978 + Demo.

I knew I had a tape of Crisis stuff, took me bloody ages to find ! It's an audience recording from 1978 and some demo goodies on the end, I don't have any more info on it I'm affraid, except what a great band they were! ' No Town Hall ' was one of the first punk singles I owned , given to me by me sis. I must say thx to them because the lyrics to 'Holocaust' helped me in one of my history exams! All their records were crackers and can be found on net, I gotta just say how many great blogs and sites I keep finding when looking for band info or photos, so nice to see it all still being appreciated, the music that is! Just read that Crisis released a cd of their last gig from 1980, hmm must find a copy. Have fun !!

DOG FACED HERMANS. Live Manchester Broadwalk 13.12.86

I was wondering round a field trying to find something decent to watch at 'Fife Aid' in 1988 when I walked into a tent and was confronted with the 'Dog Faced Hermans' and as usual with me I was totally overwhelmed with by them. Marion Coutts piercing vocals, trumpet, beating of oil drums, energy etc, It made my day and then to add to it I found the Walking Seeds playing un all! DFH formed in Edinburgh in 1986 their sound has been described as anarcho - punk with folk, noise as well as unorthodox instrumentation, they disbanded in 1995. This is an ex audience recording plus three tracks from STV broadcast 1988. Enjoy and check out more of their goodies.

JIMMY SAVILLE'S WHEELCHAIR. 'Practice Arc Studio Glasgow. 28.6.89'

You don't see or hear much about 'The Wheelchairs' on the net but I thought they were a fuckin' great band mainly from East Kilbride in Scotland. When I first saw them live they were a 3 piece, Calum, bass. Sammy, drums and Dick, guitar and vocals. Their gigs were always a good laugh full of energy and they always seemed to get everyone up dancing. Its such a shame they never managed to release anything as they worked pretty hard at it, later Dicks brother Bill joined them to make their sound even better and tighter. The last thing I heard after they split (and this is going back a good few years) was Calum joined Oi Polloi, but has now crossed the water and is in various bands one being Final Conflict. Bill and Dick I think went to live in Bradford and I'm not sure about Sammy, what ever they are doing I wish them all well.  Anyway here's an early practice, ex quality as a 3 piece but I think it was Scott Laing on drums for this. I will be posting some of their live stuff soon !!!!

THEATRE OF HATE. Live The Lyceum, London, 14.6.81

Just found out that Kirk Brandon is on the mend which is great news, click on name to read more! Going back to my fav' gigs at 'Bowes' in Stevenage, I always got excited about Theatre of Hate playing there, their gigs, support bands were not the norm which was a nice break, and you never got any trouble at them. I was always in a trance watching Kirk on stage, he had a real presence and his voice and their sound was hunting, along with their vinyl releases. I saw them a lot over the years and was never disappointed even when he formed Spear of Destiny I still kept following them, he seemed to move with the times. This is one of the best live recordings I have, released by Chaos Cassettes its great quality. Oh talking of the Bowes gigs heres a link for Nuzz he has two recordings of the gigs I mentioned.  I hope Kirk makes a full recovery and is back soon !!!!
